(Media Watch/IFEX)- Saiful Alam Mukul, editor of the “Daily Runner”, was
killed by some gunmen on the night of 30 August 1998 in Jessore, a south
eastern district town in Bangladesh. Police and hospital sources
confirmed the news. The deputy commissioner of Jessore said Saiful Alam
Mukul was returning to his Bejpara residence when the gunmen sprayed
bullets at him at around 9:30 p.m (local time), killing him on the spot.
[Bejpara is a small part of the city of Jessore.] Immediately after the
incident, he was rushed to the Jessore General Hospital, where the
doctors declared him dead. No one has been arrested in connection with
the shooting, no case has been filed in the police station and police say
they have found no clues. On 1 September (local date and time), the
journalist was buried.
The President of Bangladesh, half a dozen ministers and more than fifty
organizations, including the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists and
the Jessore Union of Journalists, expressed their condolences, and
demanded the immediate arrest and punishment of those responsible.
