BBC reporter detained by frontier guards
On 22 December 2005, Mustahkam Tangriyeva, a reporter for BBC – Uzbekistan, was detained by Tajik border guards near the Tajikistan-Uzbekistan border while on business trip to Uzbekistan.
The guards stopped the journalist from interviewing Uzbekistan residents, saying it was illegal to stay at the border zone. Although the journalist showed her accreditation with the Interior Ministry of Tajikistan, they brought her to the Turzunzade Interior Department and seized her dictaphone and personal items by force.
Igor Sattarov, head of the Interior Ministry’s Information Department, and Hudoinazar Asozoda, the Interior Ministry’s press secretary, stepped in to help the journalist. As a result, she was released.
