(RSF/IFEX) – On 22 December 1997, at around 2 am, home-made gas
bombs exploded in front of the home of Carmen Gurruchaga,
correspondent for the daily “El Mundo”, in San Sebastian. The
first bomb destroyed the main door of the journalist’s home,
while the second one caused a fire to break out. Gurruchaga and
her two sons were inside the house at the time of the attack;
however, they were not injured.
According to Gurruchaga’s sister, the journalist had been
threatened on several occasions. On 16 January 1997, a group of
Basque separatists had protested in front of Gurruchaga’s home
following the publication of one of her articles about links
between the Basque organisation, Euskadi ta Askatasuna (ETA), and
its legal representative, Herri Batasuna.
