daily newspaper “Vetcherniaia Gorlovka”, in the Donetsk region in the
eastern part of the country. According to its information, RSF reports that
on 8 January 1998 at about 3:40, unknown people threw a grenade through the
window of the office of the newspaper’s editor in chief, Olexandrina
Krouglenko. No one was injured despite the fact that an accountant and a
securtiy guard were in the office, located on the ground floor of an
apartment building, at the time of the explosion. Nonetheless, the
furniture and computers were severely damaged. According to Krouglenko, this
attack may be linked to the publication at the end of 1997 of a series of
articles about the local mafia.
