(PPF/IFEX) – Three individuals, including a policemen, were
seriously injured when an explosive device was thrown from a
moving vehicle at the offices of the Sindhi-language daily
“Sawal” in Hyderabad on 15 October 1997. The injured, which
included two staff members of the newspaper, were taken to
hospital.
Another explosion took place the same day in Hyderabad at the
offices of another Sindhi-language daily, “Kawish”.
Elsewhere, threatening telephone calls were received at the
offices of another Sindhi-language daily, “Sindh”. The telephone
caller identified himself as a member of the “Front Tiger” and
threatened the editor of the newspaper with another bomb attack.
However, a heavy police contingent was rushed to the newspaper
which probably deterred the would-be attackers.
According to press reports, the editor of “Sawal” said the
Sindhi-language press was facing hooliganism from one group. The
reference was probably to the Sindh National Front (SNF), which
has been critical of a number of Sindhi-language newspapers and
has been allegedly involved in attacks on Sindh journalists and
newspapers. Recently, the SNF has also called for a boycott of
some Sindhi-language newspapers.
