(CMFR/IFEX) – An unknown gunman shot a radio broadcaster on 12 June 2003 in Cebu City. The broadcaster survived the assassination attempt.
According to reports, Reynaldo Cortes, aged 30, a “blocktimer” at radio station dyDD Bantay Radyo (Radio Watch), was hit in the right groin. (Blocktimers buy air time from radio stations for their own programmes and are not station employees.)
Cortes was with Lito Solon, his co-anchor on the radio programme “Engkwentro” (“Encounter”), when the gunman reportedly fired, at around 2:00 p.m. (local time).
The police have yet to identify any suspect, but Cortes believes a customs officer was behind the attempt on his life. According to “The Freeman”, a Cebu-based newspaper, “Cortes had apparently earned the rancor of customs examiners in one of his commentaries over his radio program ‘Engkwentro’, where he talked about their luxurious lifestyles.”
CMFR is following up the story.
