Nairobi, December 24 2002
On Monday 23 December 2002, public but government-controlled radio and television station, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), refused to air paid advertisements by an opposition parties coalition, the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC), citing orders from top government officials.
NARC had paid more than Kes 1 million for adverts on KBC radio and television broadcasts in preparation for the general election, which will be held on Friday 27 December 2002. The advertisements were to run from Monday to Thursday 26 December.
Sources from the agency handling the coalition’s publicity said the KBC marketing manager informed NARC that their 23 commercials would not be broadcast. NARC’s director of presidential elections, Dr Nick Wanjohi, said KBC officials told the coalition that they had received instructions from the State House and the ruling party Kenya African National Union (KANU) headquarters to stop airing the ads. The instructions to not air the advertisements were said to have been conveyed directly to the station’s managing director.
NARC said it will seek legal redress.
