(JED/IFEX) – On 3 June 2004, Joseph Nkinzo, director of the Bukavu-based Radio Sauti Ya Rehema (The Voice of Mercy), sought shelter at the United Nations Mission in Congo (Mission des Nations unies, MONUC) headquarters in the city, after narrowly escaping an attempt on his life that left his younger brother dead. Bukavu has been under the control of military insurgents since 2 June.
Armed men claiming to be “looking for the journalist,” entered Nkinzo’s house on 3 June. Finding him away, they shot his 27 year-old younger brother Mukamba Mwanaume, whom they reportedly took for Nkinzo, instead, and then proceeded to pillage the journalist’s house. Nkinzo, who was hiding in an adjacent room, was not harmed.
JED was able to visit Nkinzo at MONUC headquarters, where he remains in hiding. He told the organisation that he is extremely worried about his family, from whom he has not had news. His younger brother has been buried in a temporary grave.
