(Periodistas/IFEX) – In its 6 December 1998 issue, the daily newspaper “Página/12” noted that the police investigation into the Cabezas case will end on 22 December. According to the daily, Judge José Luis Macchi confirmed this information to one of the lawyers working on the case. “Practically nothing has been done in months. We will conclude without a clear knowledge of the motive behind the crime, the weapon used, or who led the operation to kill the photographer,” admitted the magistrate. Every indication is that the trial of the ten suspects will be held in 1999, when the presidential campaign will be in full swing, though there is the ever present danger that authorities will attempt to delay the trial until after the election.
On 25 January 1997, José Luis Cabezas, photographer with “Noticias” news magazine, was found dead, burned, with two bullet wounds to the head and his hands tied behind his back, in a cellar near Pinamar. Almost two years after this terrible assassination, and despite the arrest of ten individuals, the crime remains unpunished.
