(WAN/IFEX) – In a 7 February 2002 letter to Minister of the Interior Sheikh Mohammed al-Hamad al-Sabah, WAN and the World Editors Forum expressed their outrage at the murder of journalist Hudaya Sultan al-Salem.
According to reports recently brought to WAN and WEF’s attention, on 20 March 2001 Hudaya Sultan al-Salem, owner and editor-in-chief of the weekly “al-Majales”, was murdered while she was being driven to work. She died in hospital from gunshot injuries. According to some sources, four men have handed themselves over to the police.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to the minister of the interior:
– respectfully urging him to ensure that a thorough investigation into the murder of Hudaya Sultan al-Salem is carried out and that those responsible are swiftly brought to justice
– urging him to do everything in his power to create an environment in which journalists are able to carry out their profession free from violence
