(IJC/IFEX) – The following is a 10 July 2008 joint press release by IJC and other Moldovan media organisations:
Media organisations concerned over harassment of a cameraman at the General Prosecutor’s Office
On July 10, 2008, Ghenadie Brega, EU TV station cameraman, was verbally and physically assaulted by a person at the General Prosecutor’s Office, while he was waiting for one of the young web commentators accused of “repeatedly calling for a violent upheaval of the constitutional regime, dissolution of the statehood and territorial integrity of Moldova through the web portals forum.md, torrentsmd.com, desteptarea.info and unimedia.md”.
Although the cameraman informed the aggressive individual that he was a journalist and was filming lawfully in a public institution, his assailant forced him brutally to leave and struck the camera several times.
Media organisations call on the authorities to undertake measures in order to identify and punish those responsible for this assault, as well as other cases of aggression against journalists.
We also call on the Moldovan authorities to respect strictly the right to access information in accordance with national and international laws and regulations.
