(RSF/IFEX) – The Cambodian government has decided to expel,
during the coming week, Ed Fitzgerald, Phnom Penh correspondent
for the magazine “Asia Business News”. Secretary of State for
Information Khieu Kanharith stated that the journalist, who has
worked in Cambodia since 1988, had covered events in Cambodia in
a “systematically tendentious” manner. Kanharith added that “Asia
Business News” would be able to replace its correspondent, but
that Fitzgerald would in no instance be allowed to return to
Cambodia.

Cambodian authorities concerning a return to democratic practices
and a restoration of freedoms
may continue to practise his profession in Cambodia
guaranteed in Cambodia, as is the case in the International
Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which Cambodia has
ratified
