(JED/IFEX) – During the night of Friday 2 March to Saturday 3 March 2001, four of artist-musician Kofi Olomidé’s bodyguards brutally assaulted Patchely Mudiayi Muamba, a cameraman and director from the private television station Canal Kin (placed under government supervision in recent months and renamed RTNC 3), at Kinshasa’s Grand Hotel, while Mudiayi was covering a concert by the musical group Quartier Latin International.
The Quartier Latin International band leader’s bodyguards beat up the Canal Kin cameraman and took his video cassette, which included images he had just recorded.
Mudiayi told JED that Olomidé personally ordered his bodyguards to assault him. Olomidé, who visited Canal Kin’s headquarters on Monday 5 March, apologised to the victim and expressed regret for the incident. He also denied having ordered the assault.
The video cassette taken by Mudiayi’s attackers was not returned to the cameraman, who claims to suffer from terrible pain in his ribs. Canal Kin plans to launch legal proceedings against Olomidé.
