After preventing him from leaving the country last month, the
Algerian government has permitted Omar Belhoucet, director of the
independent French-language daily “El Watan”, to travel to the
United States by dropping 14 April charges against him and
returning his seized passport. Belhouchet was invited to
participate in the annual meeting of the International Federation
of Newspaper Publishers (FIEJ), which began in Washington, DC,
United States on 18 May. Belhouchet was also slated to speak on 21
May at the dedication of the Freedom Forum Journalists Memorial, a
memorial to journalists who have been killed in the line of duty
throughout the world.
