(CEHURDES/IFEX) – On 6 October 2004, Kshetra Bahadur Regmi, alias “Kisaan”, a Communist Party of Nepal (CPN-Maoist) local leader, issued death threats against four journalists for publishing news reports on the abduction of students from a number of schools. Regmi is a member of the CPN-Maoist “peoples’ government” in Parbat district, western Nepal.
The four threatened journalists are Lal Parasad Sharma of the daily “The Kathmandu Post”, Durga Prasad Sharma, of the daily “Nepal Smacharpatra”, and Bhawani Prasad Sharma, of the daily “Spacetime”, all of whom are based in Parbat district, and Hari Narayan Gautam, of the daily “Rajdhani”, based in Baglung district, western Nepal.
CEHURDES condemns the death threats issued against the journalists. The organisation urges the CPN-Maoist rebel leaders to stop all forms of attacks against journalists and ensure that journalists can safely carry out their work in rebel stronghold areas.
