(CEHURDES/IFEX) – CEHURDES denounces the arrest of Krishna Prasad Gautam
“Maila”, publisher of the publication “Chandeswari”.
Security forces arrested Gautam on 2 June 2002 in Kathmandu. According to Ram Chandra Neupane, editor of “Janasatta” weekly and “Prabhatkalin” daily, Gautam was taken to the District Police Office in Hanumandhoka. He was kept in detention but was not charged. The publication house that Gautam works for, publishes “Sandhyakalin” and “Prabhatkalin” dailies, “Janasatta” weekly, and other monthly magazines.
Following the declaration of a “state of emergency” in Nepal on 26 November 2001, more than 100 journalists have been arrested in different parts of the country. More than two dozen journalists remain in detention. There have been no reports of official charges or cases filed against them.
CEHURDES continues to urge authorities to respect press freedom and freedom of expression and ensure an impartial news reporting environment. The organisation condemns the ongoing harassment of journalists.
