Chen Ziming, a publisher and leader of the 4 June 1989
pro-democracy demonstrations, has been returned to prison. Human
Rights in China reports that around 26 June 1995, Chen Ziming’s
relatives reported that he had been re-arrested and returned to
Beijing No 2 prison to serve the remainder of his 13-year
sentence. It is said that the reason for his re-arrest is that he
had recovered his health and is now considered by the authorities
to be well enough to return to imprisonment. PEN believes that
the real reason is more likely to be Chen Ziming’s continued
opposition to the Chinese government.
Of the around 50 people arrested in late May and early June 1995
for distributing petitions calling for democracy and release of
political prisoners, poet Huang Xiang and writer Liu Xiaobo, are
the only writers thought to remain detained. The places of
detention are not known at present.
