(AMARC/IFEX) – The following is a statement by Nikola Djuric, general
manager and editor in chief of City Radio, Nis, Serbia, on the occasion of
the two-month anniversary of the radio station’s forced closing:
**Updates IFEX alert of 18 August 1998**
It has been two months since the Yugoslav Ministry of Telecommunications
revoked the license of independent City Radio of Nis. It is the only radio
station in this region which developed its own news program, insisting on
national, religious and political tolerance, as well as different sources of
information.
It seems that our only fault was that we tried not to make City Radio a
simple jukebox, but to present our listeners with relevant information. We
refuse to accept the obvious intention of our government to silence our
independent media. We feel that censorship and restrictive information laws
are a dead-end for civilization. We take this opportunity to inform you of
our problem hoping that you will join in support of our efforts to continue
working as an independent radio station.
