(GDF/IFEX) – A report titled “Partial Justice: An Investigation into the Deaths of Journalists in Russia, 1993-2009” was presented at the Marble Hall of Moscow’s House of Journalists on June 15, prepared by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) jointly with the Glasnost Defense Foundation (GDF) and the Center for Journalism in Extreme Situations (CJES), with meaningful assistance from the Agency of Journalistic Investigations (AJOUR, St. Petersburg) and the investigations department of the newspaper “Novaya Gazeta”.
The number of speakers at the presentation included IFJ president Jim Boumelha; European Federation of Journalists president Arne Koenig; Russian Journalists’ Union president Vsevolod Bogdanov; Marius Lukosiunas, councilor with the Moscow bureau of UNESCO; the presidents of GDF and CJES; and representatives of other journalistic associations.
They called attention to the fact that the situation with journalists’ killings in Russia had not been improving from year to year, giving rise to suggestions that Russian legislation should be amended so as to make crimes against journalists equal in terms of gravity to crimes against government officials and law enforcement officers.
According to IFJ analyst John Crowfoot, this report is only part of a larger survey.
