**Updates IFEX CH alert dated 15 December 1994**
CPJ reports on 4 January that the circumstances in the 15 October
1994 arrest of publisher Gennady Romanov appear to be legitimate.
On 15 December 1994, the IFEX CH distributed an appeal for
information on the circumstances of the arrest of Romanov. It was
thought that the reasons for Romanov’s arrest might have been
linked to his publication in summer 1994 of Irina Ratushinskaya’s
book, “Grey is the Colour of Hope”.
According to CPJ, the assertion that Romanov’s arrest came as a
result of the publication of Ratushinskaya’s book was made by
Romanov’s lawyers. According to sources, Romanov was arrested for
falsifying documents in order to receive two bank loans totalling
$14,500 US.
