(AMARC/IFEX) – In early August 2002, El Quijote radio station in Montevideo was shut down by the Communications Regulatory Unit (URSEC). Two other community radio stations from Montevideo, (AMARC member) Germinal FM and La Voz FM, were shut down on 16 August.
These closures take place during a climate of social unrest rarely seen in Uruguay, in which confusion and uncertainty reign. The Union of Private Radio Stations (ANDEBU) has stated that the closures are part of a larger campaign to discredit the work of community radio stations and to boycott the work-pool that was established by URSEC at the end of 2001. The future of community radio stations is uncertain despite the fact that URSEC has made public statements declaring that they are willing to engage in dialogue with the stations.
