(IFJ/IFEX) – The IFJ is very concerned for the current safety of two
Portuguese journalists.
According to the IFJ’s information, José Alberto Carvalho and José Maria
Cyrne, of the SIC television station, were attacked by demonstrators
whilst filming events in Dili. At least one camera and a mobile phone
were broken. The two journalists were taken into custody by military
officials for their own protection.
They have since been released but cannot leave the building they are in
as their safety has not been guaranteed. They are both clearly
identifiable and have good reason to believe that they may be attacked
again should they try and make their way out without an escort.
They wish to reach the hotel of the UN representative in Dili. The IFJ
believes that it is essential for the physical safety of these
journalists that they be escorted by military or other security
personnel to the hotel.
