(RSF/IFEX) – RSF is protesting the seizure of copies of the satirical
newspaper “Mamy-Wata”. According to RSF’s information, on 4 January 1999,
Séverin Tchounkeu, director of the press group “La Nouvelle Expression”, was
notified by the judicial police that two thousand copies of the weekly
“Mamy-Wata” were seized. Authorities explained that this action was
necessary considering the risk of public order disturbances which may have
been encouraged by the newspaper’s issue number sixty-four, edited on 29
December 1998.

Send appeals to the President:newspaper are returned to their owner and that they can be put on the market
for sale
exercise its information role, as guaranteed by several international
treaties, notably the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights,
ratified by Cameroon
are able to freely exercise their work in Cameroon
