(RSF/IFEX) – On 4 July 1998, Sudanese authorities confiscated editions of
the independent newspapers “Al-Rai Al-Akhar” and “Al-Shari Al-Siyasi”.
Copies of the papers were seized at the publishing house in Khartoum before
distribution. Although government officials refused to give a reason for the
confiscation, the move is apparently connected with new directives issued by
the National Press and Publications council ordering newspapers not to
criticise the new Constitution. In a memorandum, the council also asked
newspapers to emphasise the virtues of “dialogue and national consensus”.
