On 27 November 2005, the Dushanbe Court’s Presidium upheld a 25 August ruling by the Firdavsi District Court against Mukhtor Bokizoda, editor-in-chief of the closed opposition newspaper “Nerui Sukhan”, following an appeal filed by the editor.
On 25 August, the Firdavsi District Court in Dushanbe had sentenced Bokizoda to two years of “corrective” labor and fined him 1,500 somoni (US$500). The editor was accused of stealing electricity under Article 244 of the Tajikistan Criminal Code. The damage was estimated at 1677 somoni and 98 diram (over US$500).
Bokizoda and his lawyer, Inoyat Inoyatov, said they plan to appeal the Presidium’s verdict to the Supreme Court within a few days.
