CPJ RELEASES BRIEFING ON PALESTINIAN BROADCAST MEDIA FOLLOWING ISRAELI WEST BANK OFFENSIVE
June 13, 2002, New York, NY-Private Palestinian radio and television stations were among the casualties of Israel’s six-week military offensive in the West Bank last spring.
A briefing released today by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) examines the cases of several West Bank stations that suffered heavy damage at the hands of Israeli troops during the army’s incursion. Titled “Picking up the Pieces,” the briefing includes the accounts of broadcasters who described how troops systematically destroyed a number of studios and their equipment. Some Palestinian broadcasters accuse the army of deliberately targeting the media for destruction.
The Israeli Defense Forces have acknowledged that vandalism and looting by troops did occur during the incursion, which the United Nations and the World Bank said resulted in about US$350 million dollars of damage. The army says that some of the perpetrators have been sentenced to jail and that it is investigating other cases of criminal behavior. It is unclear whether any of these cases include soldiers who may have inflicted damage to radio and television stations.
