(SEAPA/IFEX) – An influential newsmagazine in Manila has condemned what it believes to be a death threat against its managing editor.
In a statement published online on 3 August 2005, “Newsbreak” magazine said that “while we know that threats come with our job, we do not take this lightly. By letting the public know of this incident, we hope to get the best protection for (our managing editor).”
According to the magazine, on the evening of 2 August managing editor Glenda Gloria received “a wreath meant for the dead”. It was delivered to her family residence in Quezon City. A ribbon attached read, “Condolences from your loving friends.”
“Newsbreak” said the man who delivered the wreath was instructed to personally give the flowers to Gloria. “Ms. Gloria spoke to the delivery boy and he said that a man in a black car, around 30 years old, bought the wreath from their small flower shop,” “Newsbreak”‘s account of the incident said.
Gloria’s most recent articles in “Newsbreak” touched on matters related to the Philippine military. In the magazine’s 4 July issue, she wrote that the Armed Forces’ Intelligence Service is the “number one suspect” in a wiretapping scandal that has destabilised the government of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
In “Newsbreak”‘s latest issue, she reported on the alleged participation of certain officers in the 2004 election fraud in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. As managing editor, she also supervises and coordinates reporting of stories.
