(RSF/IFEX) – On 11 November 1997, Mina Feliciangeli of the
Private Communications Network company (sociedad Red Privada de
Comunicacion) in the capital, Asuncion, received an anonymous
death threat by telephone as her program “Como en la radio” was
being broadcast on Channel 13 television. The caller also
notified the journalist that a bomb had been placed in her car.
After inspecting Feliciangeli’s vehicle, police did not uncover
anything. The same day, Leo Rubun, host of the program “Al rojo
vivo”, in Nanduti, was also threatened with death by an
individual who “asked” the journalist to stop criticising General
Lino Oviedo, former Army Commander and a candidate representing
the Partido Colorado – in power for more than 50 years – in the
elections. Oviedo as been in hiding from police for more than a
month for “improper military discipline” (“indisciplina militar”)
after having criticised and attempted to corrupt current
President Carlos Wasmosy. In a press released issued on 11
November, the Movimiento Union Nacional de Colorados Eticos
(National Movement for Ethical Colorado Members), headed by
Oviedo, denied having anything to do with the threats.
