(JED/IFEX) – On 3 October 2003, at 11 a.m. (local time), Augustin Lubukayi, director-general of Radiotelevision Lumière (RTL), which is owned by the Péniel Restaurée church in Tshikapa, Western Kasai province, was detained by National Intelligence Agency (Agence nationale des renseignements, ANR) officers. He was taken to the ANR’s premises and released the following day at 3 p.m.
According to information obtained by JED, during his 1 October programme, Ilunga Mwenyapale, host of “Kashingi Kaditele” (“The needle that sews by itself”), criticised the practices of a pastor who reportedly asked each member of his congregation for US$100 to receive a blessing. The journalist noted, however, that the paster’s followers were never actually blessed.
A member of the church in question who works for the ANR decided to detain Lubukayi.
Before his release, ANR agents made the RTL director-general sign a declaration denying the information broadcast by his media outlet.
