(IPYS/IFEX) – On 20 October 1999, the director of the daily “El Tío”, José
Olaya, received a death threat via a telephone call. According to the 21
October edition of “El Tío”, the female caller insulted Olaya before
threatening him.
The threatening call, which was received by a security officer in the
newspaper’s editorial office, stated: “no security will be sufficient to
save Olaya and his family from death this time. We are going to kill him and
his family like dogs so that he shuts up once and for all.”
A number of years ago, Olaya was the victim of an assassination attempt. On
14 November 1996, he was shot in Lima’s Lince district by individuals who
have not been identified to date. The incident was never cleared up.
