Get out your phones, digital cameras, tablets, or old school Polaroids! IFEX is launching a photography contest as part of the third annual International Day to End Impunity on 23 November. Deadline for entries is 3 November 2013.
Journalists, photographers, musicians, writers, human rights defenders and others continue to be sued, threatened, attacked and even murdered with impunity in many countries simply for exercising their right to free expression. Use your camera to symbolically show the ways that impunity impacts freedom of expression.
Our favourite photos will be featured on the International Day to End Impunity Facebook page, and the top three winners will receive cash prizes and will be profiled on the campaign website.
The contest is open to professional and amateur photographers wishing to show with creativity how a culture of impunity undermines freedom of expression.

Who can participate?
The competition is open to professional and amateur photographers 18 years of age and older. Submissions must be work original to the photographer.
How do I participate?
All photos must be submitted by email to contest(@)daytoendimpunity.org with a one-line photo caption in English, along with your name, address, email and phone number. This information is for administrative purposes only – please note that photos will be judged as anonymous entries. If English is not your first language, we still encourage you to participate and to translate your caption using Google Translate. Photos will not be judged on the grammatical accuracy of their captions.
What are the guidelines?
Submissions should convey the impact of impunity on freedom of expression. Suggested themes are:
• The courage of those fighting impunity
• Activism, protests, and challenging injustice
• A culture of fear and silence
• Individuals targeted for exposing corruption, human rights violations, and organised crime, while the perpetrators go free
• Corruption, broken judicial systems and justice denied
Files must be submitted in JPG or JPEG format with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi and a minimum dimension of 2000 x 1500 pixels (must be suitable for printing). Participants may submit more than one photo.
Photographs taken by digital camera or any electronic devices are acceptable. Also accepted are scans of negatives, transparencies, or photographic prints. Minimal touch-ups on the photographs are accepted, but the submissions must be as close as possible to the original material. Please hang on to the originals! We may ask for them later.
The photograph must not violate any law or regulation and must not infringe the rights or privacy of any person or entity. It must respect the national legislation of the territory where it was taken. If minors are clearly identifiable, the photographer must obtain a signed consent form from the children’s parent or guardian. IFEX is not liable for any loss, claim, damage or expense arising from the use of the photograph.
IFEX assumes all entries are original and are the works and property of the entrant, with all rights granted therein. IFEX is not liable for any copyright infringement on the part of the entrant and will not become involved in copyright disputes.
Submissions that contain content that is gratuitously violent or sexually explicit will be disqualified.
When is the deadline?
The deadline for entries is midnight EST on 3 November 2013. Winners will be revealed on Facebook on the actual Day, 23 November.
How will my photo be judged?
A selection of the 23 top submissions meeting contest criteria will be posted on the International Day to End Impunity Facebook page: facebook.com/daytoendimpunity. Members of the public will be invited to vote on the photos from 6-19 November, so be sure to tell your friends to participate. The public’s favourite 10 photos, as determined by the number of “likes” the photo receives, will be sent to a panel of expert photographers who will select the three winners.
Anything else I should know?
By participating in this competition you allow IFEX and /or any of its members the right to reproduce and publish your submissions online and in print. This use includes, but is not limited to the daytoendimpunity.org website, IFEX.org, IFEX and IFEX members’ social media accounts, and other publications and resources. Any material used by IFEX or its members shall carry the artist’s credit line. By submitting your photograph, you also agree with Facebook’s terms and conditions that grant the website the right to further use your material, as described under clause 2.

More about the International Day to End Impunity
IFEX chose 23 November as the International Day to End Impunity in 2011. The day is symbolic because it is the anniversary of the 2009 Ampatuan Massacre, the single deadliest day for journalists in recent history. The purpose of the day is to raise public awareness and showcase the work of organisations working for justice for those being persecuted for practising their right to freedom of expression. This is the campaign’s third year.
