(CEHURDES/IFEX) – On 27 May 2004, Kanyaras Gurung, the driver of a media vehicle, was killed and two others were injured when they drove over a landmine planted by Communist Party of Nepal (CPN-Maoist) rebels in Tanahun district. The vehicle was carrying newspapers for the daily “Annapurna Post” from Kathmandu to Pokhara on the second day of a general strike called by rebels in the Gandak region.
The explosion took place at about 7:30 a.m. (local time) at Mushikhola, about three kilometres east of Damauli, Tanahun’s district headquarters.
In a separate incident on the same day, security forces in the town of Kawasoti, Nawalparasi district, stopped a van belonging to Kantipur Publications for nearly three hours. The security forces were reportedly stopping all vehicles passing through the area, citing security reasons. The van had been heading to Bhairahawa, but returned to Kathmandu after being released.
CEHURDES strongly condemns these types of rebel or state perpetrated attacks on media outlets and media workers.
