(RSF/IFEX) – The 12 November 1997 edition of the independent
daily “Al-Rai Al-Akhar” was banned from distribution. An
executive who asked not to be named said that representatives of
the Sudanese government had “seized copies of the Wednesday
edition from the printing works on Tuesday evening, even though
there was no information or report in it that could justify such
a seizure”.
The newspaper, which had not received official notification of
the ban from the National Press and Publications Council, decided
to carry on with its work. It has already been banned three times
for “publishing false information” or “erroneous reports”, and
resumed publication in June 1997 after being suspended for a
year.
