(RSF/IFEX) – According to information made available by RSF on 10 August
1998, on 7 August, Joseph Algazi editor of “Ha’aretz” and Moti Kinchi, a
photographer with the daily, were severely injured in Tel Aviv-Jaffa. They
were covering a demonstration by militants from an Islamic movement calling
for the reopening of the El Tabyeh mosque, which had been closed by the
authorities. Some of the demonstrators took the journalists aside and
started beating them. They were rescued by the police, who did not make any
arrests because they said they had orders not to do so.
RSF is very worried by this affair. The organisation wishes to be informed
of any action taken to ensure better security for journalists during
demonstrations.
