(IJC/IFEX) – On 1 May 1999, John Oseze-Langley, editor of the “Weekend Diet”
was arrested by two plain-clothes policemen from the anti-fraud unit of the
CID, Alagbon, Lagos.
Langley was picked up at about 2.30 p.m. (local time), while standing in
front of his office in the company of Nath Omame Jr., deputy editor of the
“Sunday Diet”. He was taken to force CID in Alagbon close to Ikoyi, Lagos
for interrogation.
One of the plain-clothes men said that they were detailed to arrest Langley
by a senior officer, who was sent by superior officers from Abuja, in
connection with the front-page story published in the 24 April edition of
the “Weekend Diet” titled “Why Commasie Retired”.
Langley was however released later in the day after over three hours of
interrogation. After his release, he was asked to report at the force base
on 3 May, along with the reporter who was responsible for the story, in
order to enable them to verify the authenticity of the story.
