(RSF/IFEX) – According to RSF, Alam Raihan, editor of the weekly “Sugandha”,
was arrested by detectives on 18 March 1998. The detectives came to his home
at night and took him to the police station. The journalist has been charged
with publishing “indecent and defamatory news items that confused and
tarnished the image of the present
government.” Policemen interrogated him immediately and a magistrate sent
him to jail after refusing to release him on bail.
Alam Raihan is the second journalist to be imprisoned in Bangladesh in
recent months. Mashiur Khan, editor of the daily “Pratibedan”, has been
detained since 21 November 1997. He is diabetic and the authorities sent
him to the hospital in Birdem (for information on this case see IFEX alert
of 4 March 1998).
