(FNJ/IFEX) – 21 November 2011 – The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) is seriously concerned over an incident involving our Kathmandu Chapter Member and the editor of “Everest Time Monthly” and “Employment News Daily”, Manchhiring Tamang. Tamang was assaulted by Hansraj Wagle, Vice Chair of the Nepal Association of Foreign Employment Agencies, over a news article that was published on 16 November 2011.
Tamang was at the venue to report on a meeting between representatives of the Non-Residential Nepali Association and the Department of Foreign Employment when the incident took place. FNJ condemns the incident as a violation of press freedom and notes that Wagle had the right to seek legal recourse if he is not happy with the published report.
FNJ calls on the government to take strong action against the guilty party. FNJ also demands that the concerned agency not repeat such a misdeed and urges it to fulfill its duty of respecting the rights of the media.
