On 2 June 1995, Dam Sithi, editor of the bi-weekly “Moneakseka
Khmer” (“The Khmer Conscience”) was beaten up by a group of
students from the University of Phnom Penh. He had previously
been threatened because of an article published in his paper at
the end of May, which criticized Second Prime Minister Hun Sen of
having paid students and professors to obtain their political
support. In reaction to this article, students demanded that Dam
Sithi apologize first to them, and then to Hun Sen. The attack
occurred because he had only met their first demand.
