Your Excellency,
Further to our letters of 7 September and 4 October, ARTICLE 19 has been
informed today by the Assistant Commissioner, Criminal Investigation
Department, Mr BA Kamara, that Emmanuel Sanossi, Editor of the newspaper The
Reporter, was deported to Cameroon on 4 October after six weeks in
detention. We wish to express our deep regret at this news. In both our
previous letters we asked you to order a review of the deportation order
which had been served upon him. However, we have received no information
from you or other government officials to indicate that such a review took
place before his deportation two days ago. Nor to our knowledge was Emmanuel
Sanossi allowed the right of appeal to a court against the deportation
order. We would be grateful to know why it was decided to resolve his
situation in an underhand manner which reflects little credit upon your
government.
Yours sincerely,
Malcolm Smart
Deputy Director
