(Media Watch/IFEX) – On the night of 2 October 2004, Dipankar Chakroborty, a 55-year-old senior journalist and executive editor of the Bogra-based daily “Durjoy Bangla”, was hacked to death near his residence in Sherpur. The attack occurred as Chakroborty, who was also vice-president of the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), was returning home from his workplace. According to witnesses, a group of individuals who were riding on motorcycles assaulted the journalist, striking him from behind with sharp weapons.
Thus far, the motive behind the killing is not known.
Chakroborty is survived by his mother, wife, two sons, four sisters and a brother. He started his career as a correspondent for the daily “Korotoa” in the mid 1970s and later worked as assistant editor for both “Korotoa” and the daily “Chadni Bazar”. Chakroborty had previously been president of the Bogra Union of Journalists and the Sherpur Press Club and convenor of the Sherpur Reporters’ Unity.
The BFUJ and the Bogra Union of Journalists have condemned the assassination.
