On 10 May 1996, Magdi Hussein, editor-in-chief of “Al-Shaab”, the
bi-weekly organ of the pro-Islamist Labor Party, was released.
Hussein is appealing a conviction under a controversial press law
currently being revised by parliament. CPJ is asking that
Hussein’s appeal and the prosecution of other journalists be
postponed until the parliament has finished its review of this
law. The next hearing of Hussein’s appeal is scheduled for 28 May.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to Egyptian authorities:
having exercised his right as a journalist “to seek, receive, and
impart information and ideas through any media, and regardless of
frontiers,” guaranteed by Article 19 of the United Nations’
Universal Declaration of Human Rights
journalists is a clear violation of the principles of the
Declaration of Sana’a on Promoting Independent and Pluralistic
Arab Media — principles which which were agreed upon by
journalists from the entire Arab world, and endorsed by the UN and
the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO)
press freedom in Egypt will suffer a serious blow
authorities to postpone Hussein’s appeal hearing and the
prosecution of other journalists who are being tried under Law 93
until the revised press law has been enacted
