(WiPC/IFEX) – WiPC is concerned for the safety of
Colombian editor Gerardo
Rivas Moreno. According to recent reports, an
anonymous death threat was
delivered to Moreno in January that read “you are
the object of a death
squad” in cut-out magazine letters. The note was
signed by the paramilitary
force, United Self-Defense Group of Colombia (AUC).
According to the WiPC’s information, Rivas is a
literary editor whose
professional work has included translating the
complete writings of Simon
Bolivar. It is the WiPC’s understanding that because
the Revolutionary Armed
Forces of Colombia (FARC) have named their political
movement “Bolivarianos”
after Simon Bolivar, the threatening parties may
have mistakenly assumed
that Rivas is a member of this group. In an open
letter to the AUC following
the threats, Rivas protested that he is not and has
never been affiliated
with any guerrilla movement.
