Your Excellency,
Further to our letter of 7 September, ARTICLE 19 is writing once again to
express its concern regarding the case of Emmanuel Sanossi, editor of The
Reporter newspaper and a citizen of Cameroon. A month on from our first
letter, in which we urged you to use your powers to order a review of the
decision to serve a deportation order on Mr Sanossi, it apparently remains
in force. In addition, despite the fact that he has not been charged with a
recognizably criminal offence, Mr Sanossi remains in detention.
ARTICLE 19 welcomes the willingness of the authorities in Sierra Leone to
allow us to speak directly to Emmanuel Sanossi on the telephone at Central
Police Station, Freetown, where he is being held. However, access to a
telephone is no substitute for justice. At present, Emmanuel Sanossi appears
to be languishing in judicial and administrative limbo. The time has surely
arrived for a prompt resolution of his case in a manner which reflects your
government’s oft-stated commitment to the rule of law and respect for human
rights.
Yours sincerely,
Andrew Puddephatt
Executive Director
