Today, eight newsmen, including the local press club secretary, were injured in the northern district town of Pabna in an attack launched by terrorists in the Mondutosh area, Bhangura upazilla.
A witness said a gang of terrorists, allegedly led by Parbhangura Union Parishad chairman Jahangir Alam Modhu, attacked a microbus carrying the journalists, who went to the area to gather news on a clash. The terrorists pulled the journalists from the microbus, manhandled them and stole their cameras, cash and important papers in their possession. At one point, they also tried to abduct the journalists, but failed as the journalists took shelter at the nearby police station. Later, the newsmen arrived at the district headquarters under police escort.
The injured are: Pabna press club secretary and Jugantor correspondent ABM Fazlur Rahman, Ittefaq correspondent Anwarul Haq, Prothom Alo correspondent Abdul matin Khan, Inquilab correspondent Murshed Subhani, Bangla Bazaar correspondent Zahurul Islam, Dinkal correspondent Utpal Mirza, Chatmohor correspondent of Jugantor Sharif Mahmud and Manab zamin correspondent Shafiqul Islam.
In an emergency meeting at the press club today, local journalists demanded the immediate arrest of those involved in the attack and their exemplary punishment. A case was filed with the police in this regard.
