(EOHR/IFEX) – The following is a 24 November 2001 EOHR press release:
EOHR calls for the release of colloquial/common language poet Nagib Soror
EOHR expresses its deep concern about the detention of Shohdy Nagib Soror, 39 years old, at the El Sayeda Zenab police station. The detention of Shohdy followed a resolution by the El Sayeda Zenab prosecution to release him on bail of L.E 1000, in case no. 14121, year 2001 (misdemeanor El Sayeda).
Shohdy was arrested early on Thursday 22 November 2001, and he stood before the El Sayeda Zenab prosecution the same day. He was charged with possessing immoral booklets and prints (a poem of his father’s) and subsequently the prosecution issued the above mentioned resolution.
The arrest order came after the publication of some of Shohdy’s father’s poems on the internet, which were discovered by the office investigating immoral conduct. The investigation office based its arrest resolution on a collection of Shohdy’s father’s poems, as well as some unwritten poems which were distributed on the market and which sharply criticise political cases from the 1970s.
EOHR believes that detaining Shohdy after the prosecution’s resolution to release him is a violation of Articles 41 and 42 of the Egyptian Constitution and Article 280 of the Penal Law.
EOHR considers these measures a blatant violation of the rights to freedom of opinion and expression and to exchange information. Moreover, EOHR calls on the Egyptian authorities to take the necessary measures to release Shohdy.
