Five journalists were severely beaten by police officers on 24
July 1995. They are: Marcos Caceres, a journalist with the daily
“ABC Color”; Juan Britos and Mario Diaz, photographers with the
daily “Noticias”; Carlos Benitez, a photojournalist with the
daily “La Nacion”; and Ivan Herrera, a television camera
operator’s assistant for the Cable Vision Comunicaciones (CVC)
network. The journalists were covering the National Police’s
crackdown on a group of protesters demonstrating against the
controversial opening of a recreation and sports complex.
According to SPP, the project was unilaterally imposed by a high-
ranking military officer who is said to have paid for it through
misappropriated public funds. In their repression of the peaceful
protest, National Police injured young people from various
political parties and popular organizations, and (federal)
Senator Nilda Estigarribia (f). She received a severe blow to the
head.
