(RSF/IFEX) – In a letter to the minister of the interior, General Abdel Rahim Mohamed Hussein, RSF protested the detention of five journalists who work for the independent daily “As-Sahafa”. Robert Ménard, RSF’s secretary general, asked the minister to use his position to “put an end to these kinds of incidents”. RSF reminded him that, “during 1999 six journalists were detained, and five newspapers were suspended”.
According to the information gathered by RSF, on 23 March 2000, editor-in-chief of “As-Sahafa”, Kamal Hassan Bekheit, editor Ahmed Oumerabi, and journalists Abdel Kader Hafez, Rebei Hamid and Anwar al-Tikraina were arrested and detained for several hours. The detentions were apparently due to the publication in “As-Sahafa”, of a series of articles signed by opponents of the regime.
