(RSF/IFEX) – In a letter to Minister of Public Security Shlomo Ben Ami, RSF protested the assaulting of five Palestinian journalists during a demonstration by Israeli settlers in Hebron. The organisation asked the minister to “see to it that an investigation is immediately launched into the incident, and that those responsible for the assaults are punished”. Moreover, recalling that several journalists complained of Israeli police officers’ behaviour during the demonstration, RSF Secretary-General Robert Ménard asked the minister to “provide an explanation to the organisation.”
According to information obtained by RSF, on 15 July 2000, Amer Jabari, a cameraman with American television station ABC News, Lory Abou Aitel, a photographer with the Reuters agency, Mazen Dana, a cameraman with the same agency, Naji Dana, a cameraman with the French television station TF1, and Kaweser Salam, a journalist with the Palestinian daily “Al Hayat al-Jadida”, were beaten by settlers during a demonstration in Hebron. Several of them were hospitalised. According to the journalists, Israeli police officers who were present at the scene did not step in to stop the attackers.
