(FMM/IFEX) – The following is a 4 April 2000 FMM press release:
INVESTIGATE THE BOMB ATTACK ON VEERAKESARI JOURNALIST
Free Media Movement condemns and asks for a speedy inquiry into the bomb attack on the house of Mr. G. Nadesan, Veerakesari correspondent in Batticoalo city, which took place in the early hours of April 2. FMM is concerned by the fact that nobody has been arrested so far regarding this attack, which took place in close proximity to the government’s two military camps.
In September last year, a bomb attack similar to this one took place in Jaffna in the office of Udayan newspaper. So far nobody has been arrested in conjunction with that attack either. At this time, FMM wishes to express its concern about that attack as well.
The attack on Mr. Nadesan’s house was carried out in order to intimidate him, according to our information. FMM urges the Sri Lankan government to hold an impartial inquiry and punish the perpetrators of this attack and to take steps to safeguard Mr. Nadesan from further attacks.
