(FMM/IFEX) – The following is an FMM press release:
FMM welcomes the government decision to allow journalists into war zone
The Free Media Movement (FMM) welcomes the decision by the government to allow journalists to cover both the cleared and un-cleared areas of the north and east of the country without restrictions. The FMM has been campaigning for unrestricted access to the war torn areas for years. This long overdue decision also exposes the government’s position that the restrictions were imposed for military reasons. The lifting of the restrictions while there has been no change in the ground situation proves that the decision was in fact a political one. The FMM hopes that this decision is not based on political expediency.
The FMM requests the LTTE to reciprocate the government’s decision by allowing journalists to visit areas under its control without hindrance.
The FMM hopes that journalists would avail themselves of this opportunity to report from the war zone, providing for the first time in many years a true picture of the situation in these areas.
The FMM appeals to the government and the LTTE to ensure the security of the journalists who visit the north and east.
